Migrants from Afghanistan, Sudan, Eritrea and elsewhere keep coming. Almost 100 arrive each day at the “Jungle,” a ramshackle camp perched near #Calais, France. It’s just 31 miles from Britain, the migrants’ ultimate goal. Although French authorities have spent a year and a half trying to dismantle the vast camp — a goal reiterated by President @フランソワ・オランド today — the Jungle is now larger than ever. And it remains one of the most visible symbols of Europe’s inability to cope with the influx of so many desperate people. Earlier this month, the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ staff photographer Tyler Hicks spent a week at the camp, where he took this photo of a group of men playing football. With no income and no means to make money, the migrants have little to do with their time but wait for any opportunity to cross into Britain.
