It took the photographer @davidmauricesmith 12 days to make a 1,700-mile #roadtrip across Australia’s Nullarbor Plain — a less-traveled part of the country. “I was riding this strange highway that’s both a utility road for trucks moving goods and heavy machinery and a badge of honor for tourists — the bumper stickers say ‘I crossed the Nullarbor.’ ” In Latin, Nullabor means "no trees." And in 1842, the English explorer Edward John Eyre even went so far as to describe the region as a “a blot on the face of Nature.” But Eyre’s review didn’t deter @davidmauricesmith. In fact, it inspired him. And so for for @nytmag’s Voyages issue, he rented a caravan and road-tripped across the #NullarborPlain, capturing this early morning scene at the Caiguna rest stop along the way. “I didn’t want to show the Australia we typically see: the Great Barrier Reef or the crocs or kangaroos,” he told @nytmag.
