The early bird is rewarded at Milano’s, a 137-year-old dive on Houston Street between Mulberry and Mott Streets in Manhattan. The bar, one of the last scruffy spots in an overwhelmingly chic neighborhood, opens at 10 a.m. to a sparse crowd of older men conversing quietly, if at all. But on Tuesdays and Thursdays, afternoon cocktails come with an unlikely twist: live jazz from 2 to 4, courtesy of a small group of accomplished musicians who’ve claimed the place as their own. Although Milano’s isn’t considered a live-music club, for nearly 2 years it has hosted one of the jazz scene’s best-kept secrets. But when the after-work crowd arrives, inevitably, a shift occurs. Hushed conversation grows to a dull roar. The jukebox lurches on. And by 5 p.m., it’s a whole new crowd. The @ニューヨーク・タイムズ staff photographer @rpnytimes photographed the trumpeter Carol Morgan playing in the back room at Milano’s while on #nytassignment in New York. #?
