A makeshift memorial for Keith L. Scott, 43, the African-American man who was shot and killed by police yesterday in Charlotte, North Carolina. After a night of violent clashes between the authorities and protesters, competing accounts of the shooting began to take hold. Officials say the shooting took place after #KeithScott posed an “imminent deadly threat” to police officers. But family members say that Keith was holding only a book. John Barnett, a civil rights activist, said during a news conference that Keith had simply been waiting for his son to get home from school. The shooting — which came just a few days after a white police officer in Tulsa, Oklahoma, fatally shot #TerenceCrutche — was the latest in a string of deaths of black people at the hands of the police that have stoked outrage around the country.
