When many Americans think of Africa — and it’s almost always the continent, never a specific country — often what comes to mind are wartime scenes of starving children, kids toting machine guns and diseases like AIDS and Ebola. Then there’s @everydayafrica, a home for photos of places that aren’t in constant chaos. Now, @everydayafrica’s founders — @austin_merrill and @pdicampo — are turning the Instagram feed into a book. They hope that people might see a photo of kids playing the game ampe in Accra, Ghana. Or this photo, by @andrewesiebo, of women using their cell phones in Lagos, Nigeria. Their aim isn't to play down the very serious problems facing Africa, but to show instead the power of documenting the ordinary. “We can still capture normal life carrying on,” said @austin_merrill, “even during moments of crisis.” A @kickstarter campaign for @everydayafrica begins today. Visit the link in our profile to read more about the project. #regram
