For 30 years, @alicetanridley — whose daughter is the actress Gabourey Sidibe (@gabby3shabby) — has been performing in the Herald Square subway station in Midtown Manhattan. “It’s not that good this summer,” she said recently. “Times are tough for everybody. Plus it’s hot.” She usually plays a 3-hour set. “On a good day, I can break $300,” she said. “This summer, it’s between $100 and $200.” Of course, @alicetanridley has been singing outside of the subway, too. She has performed at @bbkingbluesnyc near Times Square and at theaters across the country and abroad. And she appeared on @nbcagt in 2010. Not many singers — particularly those who've worked anonymously for years — get a shot at performing for a broader audience. But @alicetanridley, 63, has a show at the @highlineballroom in Chelsea on Saturday, in connection with the release of her first album. @george_etheredge photographed Alice Tan Ridley practicing before she started to film her first-ever music video.
