A #sheep stood on a ridge leading to the summit of the 2,848-foot-high #Blencathra, a mountain in the fabled English Lake District. 2 years ago, ramblers, climbers and hill-lovers banded together to try to buy the peak for 250,000 pounds. The deal would have transferred ownership from the landed gentry to those who roam its heights. But as competing visions emerge about how one of England’s most scenic regions should be run and owned, and for whose benefit, the deal has fallen apart. Environmentalists think parts of the region should be “rewilded,” or returned to a more natural state, but traditional hill farmers don’t want to lose this slab of sheep-farming territory. @philmoorephoto photographed this #? while on #nytassignment in the #LakeDistrict, a national park that’s spread over 912 square miles in England.
