The first European to cross the Nullarbor Plain in Australia, the English explorer Edward John Eyre said at the time that it was a “hideous anomaly, a blot on the face of Nature, the sort of place one gets into in bad dreams.” Somehow, Eyre's 1841 review made the photographer @davidmauricesmith curious to go. And so, he set off on a #roadtrip in “a rented caravan, with a little fridge stuffed with reasonably O.K. things to eat, blasting tunes, mostly classic rock.” Over 12 days, @davidmauricesmith traveled 1,700 miles taking photos for @nytmag. “Along the way, I met other people out there trying to find something, or get away from something, as everyone I met in the Nullarbor seemed to be,” he told @nytmag. @davidmauricesmith took this #selfportrait while wearing a headlamp near a rest stop in Balladonia, Australia.
