Among theater artists and other experimentalists, supersizing performances has become something of a fad. But @taylormacnyc’s latest project makes recent examples of cultural endurance seem like a hike in the park. For 5 years, @taylormacnyc — who is 43 but has the stamina of a man half his age — has been preparing “A 24-Decade History of Popular Music.” That’s one decade an hour, from the American Revolution to the present day. Beginning this Thursday, it will be meted out in 3-hour chunks at @stannswarehouse. But on October 8 at noon, a ticket buyer who pays $400 and pledges not to leave will be treated to an all-day, all-night extravaganza of acrobats, burlesque performers, puppets, a choir, a marching band and 24 back-up musicians disappearing one by one. Lack the stamina to hear what @taylormacnyc has to say? “I grew up in your government, I grew up in your living institutions, I grew up in your churches and stuff. I’m asking you to spend 3 to 24 hours at my church at one point in your life,” he said. “I’m not asking you to convert.” @jessedittmar took this portrait of @taylormacnyc in full costume at @stannswarehouse.
