Rachel Harris, a @princeton_university student, collected water from a hot spring in western South Africa to test for microbes. These tiny organisms exist in places nearly impossible to reach, live in eternal darkness and flourish from heat generated from the interior of the planet below. Scientists are pursuing these organisms in the underworld, not just in South Africa but in mines in South Dakota and at the bottom of oceans. They're also looking in hot springs, like this one, whose source of water from far below should carry up underground microbes. What they learn could provide insights into where life could exist elsewhere in the solar system, including Mars. @alexiawebster took this photo while on #nytassignment in South Africa.
