In sitting volleyball, height truly matters. The game is played by people with various impairments who, sitting and sliding along the floor, volley over a nearly 4-foot net. And so at 8’1”, towering above other players at the @paralympics in Rio, Morteza Mehrzad of Iran has a distinctstinct advantage. While seated, he can strike the ball 6 feet 4 inches off the ground using his right arm. When Morteza was 16, a bike accident injured his pelvis, causing his right leg to stop growing. Today, it’s about 6 inches shorter than his left, and he often uses a wheelchair to get around. Mehrzad, embarrassed by his height and a hormonal disorder, acromegaly, which causes changes in facial bone structure, rarely left his home before he was discovered. But, Iran's coach Hadi Rezaei tracked Mehrzad down after seeing him on a TV program: “We gave him reason to hope, and he wanted it, of course.” Now, at the #ParalympicGames, Mehrzad, who turns 29 this weekend, is giving other coaches reason to pause. Or find taller players. @lil_milty photographed this game between Iran and China on Saturday night.
