Mexico City’s organ grinders are among the city’s more curious class of street performers. For years, they were beloved by residents, but these days they’re in a gloomy mood, convinced that their art — and a central part of the city’s culture — is fading away. But numbers tell a different story. There are more organ players now than there have been at any time in the last 3 decades, their union president says. The problem: They’re losing fans. Many young people, forced to listen to their music while out at a restaurant or in a square, pay them to leave. There’s also more competition lately as break dancers, mimes, movie characters, musicians, artisans, superheroes and the afflicted all vye for spare change. On a recent day, Oscar Rosas Jardines, 20, mopped sweat from his brow as he played in a prime location outside the cathedral in the historical center. “My dream is to one day earn enough money to buy one of these, to conserve this part of our culture on our own,” he said. @danielberehulak captured Oscar shaking hands with Azam Ahmed, the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ bureau chief for Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean. #?
