When Khadjou Samba started surfing, her parents disapproved. They thought #surfing was something white people or boys did — not an activity for their daughter. So to get to the beach, Khadjou would sneak out a window of her family's house in #Dakar, Senegal. Today, she supports herself as an instructor, and her parents are more accepting. @malinfezehai photographed Khadjou and other surfers while on assignment for @nytmag. There, on Africa’s westernmost edge, the breaks are exposed to swells from the southern and northern hemispheres, which means decent surfing conditions almost every day. “There are so many elements that were new to me,” @malinfezehai told @nytmag of her experience. “Sand and water and timing. I have newfound respect for surf photographers.” Visit the link in our profile to see more of @malinfezehai’s photos of wave riders from #Dakar. #? #regram
