The photographer @samuel_aranda13 pointed his camera toward a mirror to capture this reflection of Hasankeyf, an ancient town in southeast Turkey. Hasankeyf has an abundance of history, more than 12,000 years of it. The town dates back to the Neolithic period, when it was the site of one of the world’s first organized human settlements. The empires that came later all left their imprints: Byzantines, Romans, Seljuks, Ottomans. But soon, Hasankeyf, along with its thousands of years of history, will be submerged. A contentious dam project that dates back to the 1950s is more than 80% complete. The last part, filling a reservoir, will force thousands of residents from their homes and swamp much of the town. The Turkish government is building a new town to accommodate the people that will be displaced, but because of many delays, including work stoppages, resistance from environmentalists and even sabotage, no one can say for sure when the reservoir will be filled.
