Phil Rosen, 64, played paddle ball at the Silver Gull Beach Club on the Rockaway peninsula in Queens. Phil, a retired city bus and livery cabdriver said he knows the streets of New York City so well that, “I was GPS before they knew what it was.” And so he earned the nickname “Five Borough Phil.” At Silver Gull, Phil and his one-liners aren't alone on the paddle ball courts. Most summer days, they’re all out there, slapping the ball on the sun-baked concrete: The Doctor, The Plumber, The Killer, Rockaway Steve and, of course, The Duck. To them and the 60 or so other regular players, the real merit of the Silver Gull, one of the last private oceanfront clubs in NYC, is the 8 paddle ball courts tucked away in a rear corner of the parking lot. The competitors are men and women, whose ages vary widely, from small children to David Gelfman, 101, who played into his 90s. These are serious games, often infused with trash talking and occasionally injuries that have left players with bad shoulders, elbows and knees.
