A man dove into in the Amstel River in a quiet part of Amsterdam North. The Dutch city has changed dramatically in a short time, thanks to a number of forces. First, the population is growing. Amsterdam’s largest group of newcomers — both Dutch and immigrants from places like Turkey and Morocco — are between the ages of 20 and 34. To accommodate this influx of young people, the city has plans to build 50,000 homes over the next 10 years. Another reason for the changes: tourism is spiking. There were 4.3 million hotel stays in #Amsterdam in the first 4 months of 2016, an 11% jump over the same period in 2015, which itself was a record high. And then to top all of that, add global hipsterism. Amsterdam — with its orderly northern languor, its human scale and its society built around coffee and beer — is now seen as a place to be. @ilvynjio took this photo while on #nytassignment for @nytimestravel.
