The @nationalparkservice turns 100 next week. Its birthday party will take place at @yellowstonenps under a stone arch emblazoned with the words “For the benefit and enjoyment of the people.” This is a uniquely American idea. Congress’s decision to protect these natural wonders reflected a simple idea: In a democracy, landscapes should belong to everyone. Today, 412 parks, national monuments and historic sites cover more than 84 million acres in the United States. Last year, they were visited more than 307 million times. “These parks belong to all of us,” writes David Duncan in #NYTopinion. “We should all visit them and enjoy them.” ?⛺️? To celebrate #NPS100, we want to see your photos of America’s #nationalparks. We’re looking for pictures of you or your fellow park-goers in action — hiking, camping, stargazing, fishing, running. For inspiration, look to this photo @janie_osborne took of a raft trip in the @grandcanyonnps last August. Post your picture with #nationalparksNYT. And visit the link in our profile to read the full op-ed.
