Jennifer Hicks held her wedding dress outside her parents’ house in Denham Springs, just east of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Jennifer and her husband spent hours yesterday helping her family clear out her childhood home, which was badly damaged in the flooding that hit the southern part of the state over the weekend. When the photographer @btarnowski arrived, the family had just begun the emotional process of clearing out Jennifer’s childhood bedroom. She salvaged her graduation photos and her diploma, as well as her wedding dress. “It wasn’t terribly damaged,” @btarnowski said. “She felt like it might be able to clean up.” As floodwaters slowly ebbed in southern Louisiana today, emergency officials and residents pursued an extensive recovery operation that included door-to-door searches and urgent efforts to provide basic services and shelter. State officials have blamed the flooding for at least 11 deaths, including 5 in East Baton Rouge Parish. About 30,000 people have been rescued, and about 40,000 homes have been damaged. @btarnowski took this photo last night while on #nytassignment in Denham Springs.
