It’s a bird! No, it’s a crocodile! Plenty of @オリンピック spectators are mystified by the choreography behind synchronized swimming routines. Sure, it may look as though athletes are just gesticulating emphatically, flinging themselves around in improbable configurations and executing complex leg movements while upside down and not breathing. But that’s not the half of it. Each #synchro routine also has an elaborate theme that must be conveyed with grace, precision and dramatically relevant facial gestures, as well as complicated moves. On top of all that, it has to look fun. And yet, despite the amount of effort that #synchro swimmers put into their themes, sometimes even the judges have trouble figuring out what they’re supposed to mean. While #ReportingfromRio on Monday, @mjrhill photographed the sisters Anna-Maria and Eirini-Marina Alexandri of Austria performing a duet to Michael Jackson’s “Smooth Criminal.” Visit the link in our profile to read about memorable #synchronizedswimming performances, from the obvious to the hideously ill conceived.
