Justin Schmidt climbed a tree outside Tucson to get a closer look at killer honeybees. Over the years, Justin, 69, has been stung by dozens of insects for his research, making him an expert in physical agony. By trade, he’s actually an entomologist, an expert on the Hymenoptera order — wasps, bees and ants. His new book, “The Sting of the Wild: The Story of the Man Who Got Stung for Science,” weaves his theories about stinging insects through a narrative of his personal experiences. The appendix: Justin’s celebrated Pain Scale for Stinging Insects, which he created mostly by firsthand experience, either by suffering stings incidentally or, in some cases, by inducing them. Because not every sting feels the same, the scale features haiku-like descriptions for each of the 83 entries. (Anthophorid bee, Pain Level 1, “Almost pleasant, a lover just bit your earlobe a little too hard.” Maricopa harvester ant, Level 3, “After eight unrelenting hours of drilling into that ingrown toenail, you find the drill wedged into the toe.”) Visit the link in our profile to read more about the connoisseur of pain and to see more @nytmag photos by @Robert Clark. #??
