This 100-foot-tall, owl-like geoglyph could be one of the world’s first billboards. It was etched on a Peruvian mountainside by the Nazcas, a culture that lived from 100 to 600 AD. Recent findings suggest that these geoglyphs were created to direct people toward trading posts, similar to a modern-day advertisement. TED Prize winner and archaeologist Sarah Parcak is searching Peru for exciting, hidden artifacts, but she’s racing against looters who threaten to erase centuries of irreplaceable history. “We don’t just want to find sites to say we found them,” she says. “We also want to find ways to help protect the cultural heritage we all share.” Read more about the lost cultures of Ancient Peru at go.ted.com/ancientperu
