This is Jomon Sugi, a Japanese cedar found on the remote island of Yakushima. It’s estimated to be between 2,180 and 7,000 years old, making it one of the oldest trees in the world. Photographer Rachel Sussman took this photograph during her travels, and it sparked a photo series documenting the world’s oldest living things. "It's my hope that, by going to find these organisms, I can help draw attention to their remarkable resilience and help play a part in insuring their continued longevity,” she says.
