In 1838, the top Catholic university in the U.S. needed money. So, 2 of the school's early presidents, both Jesuit priests, organized the sale of 272 slaves to help secure the future of what is now @georgetownuniversity. With the help of a genealogist, @ニューヨーク・タイムズ confirmed the ancestry of several readers who suspected their ancestors were among those slaves. Charles Hill, who appears here in a portrait by @misterwidmer, is one such descendant. His great-great grandfather’s name, Bill Hill, appears on the passenger list of the Katherine Jackson, one of several vessels that carried slaves to the port of New Orleans in 1838. “What should Georgetown do?” Bill asks. “Put up a monument with our forefathers’ names on there. Give some scholarships to the kids. I’m 74. I’m on my way out of this world. If I could leave something behind to educate my grandkids, that’s what I would like to do.” Visit the link in our profile to read more stories from descendents of the slaves sold to aid Georgetown. #nytweekender
