Hangar 17 at JFK Airport in New York is big enough to house a Boeing 747. For 14 years, though, it has held something much larger: the morning of Sept. 11, 2001. The hangar contained items that were salvaged from the World Trade Center — symbols of destruction, despair, pathos, hope and resilience. But now, it’s nearly empty, and when summer ends it will close. So what about all of the objects inside? Over the years, @panynj has distributed 1,890 pieces of the twin towers’ steel and 550 other objects to the @911memorial and the @nysmuseum in Albany, as well as institutions and organizations around the world. About 50 unclaimed items include the remains of a vehicle, pictured here in a photo by photographer Johnny Milano (@grief).
