In the 80s, Kid Creole and the Coconuts didn’t have the formula for a pop hit in the U.S. But across Europe and Japan, the band and its danceable, tropical-treat songs were a sensation — a musical waiting to happen. Now, nearly 40 years later, that musical is finally taking shape. “Cherchez La Femme: The Musical” is a fictional, parallel-universe take on band leader August Darnell’s world. “This musical is out of sync with musicals now,” said August, the show’s 65-year-old co-author, songwriter and inspiration. “We could look at that as playwrights and say, ‘We’ve got to get serious topics because that’s what gets the critics excited.’ But that’s not my choice. We made a conscious decision. We want a happy-go-lucky musical that reflects the kind of people we are.” @heislerphoto photographed August sporting his signature 1940s attire. “Cherchez La Femme” opened tonight at @lamamaetc.
