On #Easter Sunday, a #dance troupe performs a version of the Dance of the #Matachines, a #ritual dance from northern New Mexico outside El Santuario del Chimayo (the Sanctuary of Chimayo) in the village of Chimayo, New Mexico. The colorful dance combines #Hispanic, #Catholic and Native American elements and symbols, with an overarching theme of good triumphing over evil. El Santuario del Chimayo is a Catholic church built in 1814 and is located on the High Road to Taos in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The church is an important site in the of rich Hispanic history and #traditions of Northern New Mexico- the church and the dirt inside is thought to have healing powers, and many thousands of faithful make pilgrimages to Chimayo, especially during Easter week or Semana Santa.
