Photo: @jim_sugar | While working on a story on Ireland for National Geographic, I spent a week in the Aran Islands near Galway. As I was about to leave Inisheer, a local fishermen told me that one of his friends had recently died in Galway. A boat was bringing his body back for burial in Inisheer. Acting on a hunch, I decided to stay on Inisheer to see what transpired. This photo of the casket being moved from the boat to the church has always been one of my favorites. I was 20 years old at the time. National Geographic published it as a “double truck”—across two pages. It has won numerous awards. When I showed the photo to my friend and mentor Jim Stanfield, he said: “If you have a choice between being good and lucky, take lucky every time.” Thanks Jim.
