#pledgeforparity We are on track to hit wage parity in 117 years. I won’t live to see it, but I hope that my life will play a part in it. A generational shift that simply says equal pay for equal work make simple, sound sense. Why does it matter whether it gets done by a man or a woman as long as it gets done well? I believe in the American dream of equality. I believe in a world built on patience, tolerance and love. In the U.S. high schools, girls outperform boys and female students often equal or even outnumber male students in college and graduate school. But those college educated women then end up making 15 percent less than their male peers by the time they are 35. New lawyers are often split 50-50 male-female whereas women are just 17 percent of equity partners at law firms nationwide. Women in the U.S. today earn on average 79 cents for every dollar to paid to men, which amounts to a gap of $10,762 per year. It varies state by state, with D.C. being the most gender equal place in the country at 90 center for every dollar and Louisiana being the worst with women earning 65 cents for every dollar paid to men. For women of color, the wage gap is greater. African American women are paid, on average, 60 cents and Latinas are paid just 55 cents for every dollar paid to white, non-Hispanic men. I want to live in a world where hard work and determination are the key defining factors of your success, not your gender or skin color. I want to live in a world that gives all our children the same chances. How about you? #internationalwomensday
