About 35 years before the start of WWI, the French constructed a formidable perimeter of large forts around the strategically important town of Verdun. The forts were thought to be impenetrable. But by the time WWI began, the technology of modern warfare had advanced so quickly that these forts were unable to resist that attack of the enemy and became obsolete. This is the entrance to Fort Rozelier which sustained a direct hit, exposing the fort’s interior.
