Met Mr M Bala Subramanion and his wife at the gazetting of the @fullertonhotel as a national monument yesterday. Mr Bala used to work in the Fullerton Building (as it was formerly known) when it was home to the General Post Office, or “GPO”. He joined the GPO as a postal clerk in 1936, became Postmaster General in 1967 and retired in 1971. He is now 98!

Built in 1928, the Fullerton Building was home to many government offices. Mr Bala was one of the pioneer generation civil servants, including Dr Goh Keng Swee and Mr Hon Sui Sen, who used to work there, building the prosperous Singapore that we enjoy today.
