Do you know what is in a crisis kit bag? During emergencies, our Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) Crisis Response Teams (CRTs) have to be ready to leave at a moment’s notice to wherever Singaporeans are in need of assistance. Their essential equipment are pre-packed into crisis kit bags, so that they can be picked up by the CRTs before they head to the airport.

This was one of the exhibits on display at the MFA exhibition – “50 Years of Singapore’s Foreign Policy”. The exhibition showcased milestones in Singapore’s diplomatic history and MFA’s work, and was put up in conjunction with the S Rajaratnam Lecture where I spoke at yesterday.
Compared to where we started off 50 years ago, Singapore’s position in the world has improved immeasurably. We are respected and successful. We enjoy good standing in the international community and we have friends from around the world.

For this, we have generations of MFA officers and Ministers to thank, starting with our first Foreign Minister, the late Mr S Rajaratnam, after whom the Lecture series is named.
