As with many old Russian plants, at the former Lenin Steel Works in Magnitogorsk, gas and dust filters for the smokestacks were often missing or inoperative. For decades, a third of the city's inhabitants suffered from respiratory ailments, including asthma and chronic bronchitis. Air pollution continues to be a serious problem all over the world, and I am hopeful that the current climate talks in Paris will come to an agreement and potential solution to protect the Earth.
