I’m thinking of heading back to the Glamis Dunes to continue my coverage next week for Thanksgiving. On holiday weekends, visitors gather at the dunes from all over the western U.S. and Mexico to race dune bikes, buggies, and other 4-wheel drive vehicles. This 100,000-acre haven for off-road car enthusiasts is part of the Imperial Sand Dunes, the dry bed of Lake Cahuilla, the Salton Sea's ancient ancestor. Thanksgiving is the biggest weekend, attracting more than 150,000 visitors - thereby more than doubling the population of Imperial County. With that many people, the combination of daring stunts with lots of alcohol produces a number of fatalities each year. These races continue annually, despite the disapproval of those concerned with the environment.
