An otherwise trickling brook along Newfound Gap Road is transformed into a stream by a day of heavy precipitation. The Great Smoky Mountains, named for naturally-occurring mist-like clouds that frequently surround the mountains, are affected by air pollution from nearby industry, power plants, and cars.
