Many places around the world observe celebrations similar to the American Thanksgiving as a day of giving thanks for the blessings of the preceding year. It has its historical roots in religious and cultural traditions and has long been celebrated in a secular manner as well. A few years ago, I enjoyed an equivalent feast with a group of indigenous reindeer herders in western Siberia as they were about to move on to new pastures.
