These brown #pelicans were huddled together this morning on a rock in the #Pacific near #Pescadero, #California. As ungainly as they look on land, they are magnificent fliers that dive head first for fish, of which a single #bird can eat up to four pounds a day. Although they were briefly threatened in the Seventies by the now-banned pesticide DDT, which caused them (and eagles) to lay thin-shelled eggs, they are again abundant and soar the coast in graceful squadrons. #flying #gordonwiltsie
