Photo by Jeff Gusky @hiddenwwi | Self-portrait carved by an American WWI soldier from Boston, Massachusetts named Archie Sweetman. Now in darkness deep under a rural farm, during World War I this place was a vibrant underground city housing hundreds of American troops. It was outfitted with telephones and electric lights, living quarters and anunderground kitchen. Archie Sweetman was wounded but survived the war. He became a leading artist in the Boston area in the 1950’s and 60’s. Sweetman had a home on Cape Cod and went back to college late in life, graduating when he was in his 90’s. He was part of New England’s Yankee Division, made up of National Guard Units from each of the New England states. These young men grew up together in the same neighborhoods, were school classmates since youth, and played on the same neighborhood sports teams. When called upon to volunteer for service in WWI, they often enlisted together and fought and died together in France. When you walk through this particular underground city, you feel their patriotism and love for America expressed through what they wrote on the walls. They were clear about who they were as Americans and their duty to defend freedom.
