Meet Shabera Bibi, 50, who lives in the Old Seemapuri district of New Delhi and has been a waste picker for most of her life. A Muslim, divorced mother of seven, Bibi has proudly provided for her family against all odds. To survive in this trade, she must pick about 120 pounds of garbage per day. She climbs up and down hundreds of stairs as she collects the household trash from 500-600 residents, some of which hand dripping trash bags through a gap in the door.
Make no mistake. Bibi is a force to be reckoned with, leading the fight against police harassment and mafia controls over waste collection in Delhi. With her lead, waste pickers organized to stand up for one another against government crooks and Mafia members, marching to their very door steps if a picker was molested. So much risk for the privilege to pick up life's leavings.

Bibi now has the help of one hired man, two of her sons and a fleet of three bike carts which help her in the trash trade. She's an entrepreneur, a labor activist and mother of seven.
