“This was the third time in my career I was assigned to shoot portraits of #MatthewMcConaughey, who is maybe my all-time favorite celebrity to work with — warm, friendly and totally unpretentious. He is one of those rare celebrities whose actual personality matches his public image. This particular shoot happened during a junket for the film 'Dallas Buyers Club,' at the height of the 'McConaissance.' I was happy to see he hadn’t changed at all over the years. In fact, he walked into the hotel room by himself, sans even a publicist. I did a pair of set-ups inside but I noticed that this room had a wrap-around patio with a panoramic view of Los Angeles. I’d be crazy not to use it for a backdrop. I first shot him with the late-afternoon sun directly hitting his face, and those portraits were good, but then I decided to take a chance by reversing the angle and shooting directly into the light. Shooting into the sun gave him a nice natural rim light and made L.A. look almost otherworldly in the background.” As told to @Rolling Stone by @cpizzello
