“I was assigned to photograph #Dave Grohl in conjunction with his series #SonicHighway.' With these assignments, I knew that time would be short and the specifics of the location were unknown. So I planned for anything. I brought lights, backgrounds, different format cameras. I was on my way to shoot at a hotel when I got a call asking if we could shoot at the Ed Sullivan Theater. The #FooFighters were going to be on 'Letterman' so I would shoot Dave there. I assumed we’d shoot in a tiny dresssing room. When I arrived, however, I was pleasantly surprised when Dave asked if we can shoot on the roof! Dave, myself and my camera got to the top floor and climbed up a fire escape ladder. Above the hustle of midtown Manhattan, we could see everything, with the faint sound of taxi horns in the distance. I asked Dave how he knew about the roof and he said that he had discovered it on one of his many visits roaming around the building. His suggestion showed that he had thought about the photo. Any time a subject invests in the process makes for a more successful image — and also a more fun shoot for me.” As told to @Rolling Stone by photographer @victoriawill
