#NoDoubt released their breakthrough album #TragicKingdom two decades ago this year. While the LP helped the Californian band go global, its creation resulted from a collection of personal heartbreaks. Not only did lead singer #GwenStefani's brother Eric quit the band to continue an animation career with 'The Simpsons,' but the vocalist also went through a rough breakup with bassist #TonyKanal that inspired many of the songs on the album. "I was, 'Fuck, I can't keep writing about the same thing,'" Stefani said in the May 1st, 1997 issue of #RollingStone. "'But I gotta write about what's in my head, and that's the only thing on my mind.'" After writing song "Happy Now?" she called up Kanal to share her pride in the bitter, taunting track about her ex. "I was, 'Dude, I totally wrote the raddest song – I have to read it to you. Promise you won't get mad at me.'" Before Kanal had accepted the public airing out of their dirty laundry, he offered to quit the band. "Because he loved me so much I would never let him," said Stefani. Did she offer to quit, too? Laughing, she answered, "Fuck, no." Photograph by Paul Natkin
