A team of @usnavy robotics engineers in California are working on a tool that can make anything from a Humvee to a boat do its job without human input. Their mandate is simple: Take the solider out of the minefield. To get to higher levels of autonomy, these machines have to be smart enough to tell the difference between a rock and a ravine without the aid of street signs, satellite information or even paved roads. In field tests, our autonomous future still seems far away.
