Why did you choose to join Instagram? Answer: As an arts organisation, we’re naturally going to be drawn to the visual methods of communicating. With its ever-growing community, high engagement and of course the creativity of its users, the decision to join Instagram was a very simple one. Put simply, we have great photos to share, and also enthusiastic visitors whose photos we like to see – with Instagram, we get to enjoy doing both. Also, March 2012 was the Barbican’s 30th birthday so we kicked it off with a massive photography competition on Instagram to celebrate our building and all the exciting things that happens in and around it. ________________________________________Q: How relevant is Instagram for an arts centre like you? A: Whether its high quality production shots of our performances or mobile photography capturing backstage moments or candid shots of happenings in our building, we’re fortunate to have a wealth of vibrant and varied images at our fingertips – and then combine that with the iconic architecture of the Barbican Centre itself and the surrounding Barbican Estate. For us, Instagram connects us to our audiences in a unique way, allowing us to learn more about their experiences of the Barbican. We get to see those quick snaps of an empty stage as you wait for the show to start, a photo of our Lakeside or the Foyers while you’re waiting for a friend after work or that photo you spend hours framing, waiting for the light to be just right. It’s a Barbican that we don’t always get to experience ourselves and it’s this range of views and types of photography, and the social impact of these, that makes Instagram so appealing.
