Mr Ee Boon Lee, a veteran journalist, passed away on Sunday. I paid respects at his wake last night.
As a young reporter, he accompanied my father overseas, including an epic month-long journey in 1964 to Africa to explain Malaysia to influential African leaders, and another trip to Eastern Europe after Separation to brief them of Singapore’s independent, sovereign status.
He later ran NTUC News and edited the PAP publication Petir. He was a professional journalist, with a good feel for the ground and a knack for getting on with people.
I last met Boon Lee at the Pioneer Generation Tribute event in February this year. He was in good spirits; I did not even realise that he was already ill.
