We celebrated Mr S R Nathan’s 90th birthday last night.

I have known SR for close to 40 years. Grateful for his friendship, guidance and contributions to Singapore.

SR sowed many seeds which have grown into enduring legacies for Singapore, in the trade union movement, in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and in the young people he took an interest in and groomed.

One real tree SR planted was this beautiful antique Littleleaf Japanese Maple at our Washington embassy. SR was Ambassador when we moved to this new building.
