This plane is powered by solar energy. It’s designed to fly day and night, fueled only by the 17,000 solar panels you see across the wings. The aircraft, made of carbon fiber, is incredibly lightweight. Although it has a wingspan of 236 feet, it weighs about as much as a car. Aeronaut Bertrand Piccard, who spoke at TEDGlobal in 2009, plans to fly this plane around the world in March 2015. He has already done the full trip in a hot-air balloon and after that, he said, “I made a promise to myself that the next time I fly around world, it would be with no fuel.” Watch his 2009 talk to learn more about his adventures: on.ted.com/solarplane
