In 1954, an earthquake in the Galápagos lifted this coral reef about 20 feet (6 meters) out of the ocean. The reef is over 400 years old today, and it’s still fully exposed. Oceanographer Rob Dunbar examines ancient corals and sediments like this one to trace changes in the climate and oceans over the past 50-12,000 years.
