These workers are pollinating flowering trees by moving pollen from flower to flower with a paintbrush. More than one third of the world’s crop production is dependent on bee pollination, but in the past decade, bee colonies have started dying en masse. In the United States alone, an average of 30% of all beehives are lost every winter. So in parts of the world where there are no bees, or where non-native crops are unattractive to local bees, people are paid to pollinate by hand. In her fascinating #TEDTalk, researcher Marla Spivak explains why bees are disappearing and how their decline will affect us.
