Meet the Kikuyu black and white colobus, more commonly known as “magistrate” because of its glossy black fur, and long, white hair that resembles a full-length cape or robe worn by judges. Found only in a small range restricted to Mt. Kenya and the Aberdares, this area is largely protected, which is good news for this and other species who rely on the same forested areas for food and shelter. A social species, this monkey is often seen in groups of up to 15 individuals. They prefer to live deep in the forest where they can glide through the canopy, leaping from tree to tree in search of tasty leaves to eat. While they will munch on fruits, bark, seeds, and blossoms, their favorite treat is unripe leaves from the hackberry tree. Photo taken at Lisbon Zoo, Portugal.
