As the #WorldSeries kicks off tonight, we took a look back through the #SothebysArchive at some of the incredible objects that mark baseball’s greatest moments.

Here, the first baseball pitched at the grand opening of Fenway Park in Boston on 20 April, 1912. On Grand Opening Day, Boston Mayor John “Honey Fitz” Fitzgerald (future grandfather of President John F. Kennedy) threw out the first ball in the park that would come to be known as “Boston’s Sistine Chapel.”

The umpire, Tom Connolly, enjoyed marking the landmark games by taking home the balls as souvenirs. In 2006, the ball was sold at #SothebysNewYork with an estimate of $30,000 to $50,000.
